Second Chances Farm

Sykesville, Maryland. Since 2009, The Thoroughbred Racing Foundation (TRF) opened it’s program for the Central Maryland Correctional Facility (CMCF).

It is a Public Safety Works program and restorative justice tool that the DPSCS offers the offender population at CMCF. This facility is a pre-release prison and this program is designed to better prepare those who are fortunate enough to get in, for re-entering society.

Here is a video done by National Geographic on the program:

There are many success stories that can be found at: https://www.trfinc.org/farms-and-facilities/central-maryland-correctional-facility/

You can also donate to the program. Inmates get a certificate with graduation and a ceremony that is very special and meaningful to those who earn it. There are also opportunities to participate in special events that bring people from the outside to the farm and interact with.

On the farm, inmates have a kitchen and lockers to store their lunches. It’s usually a small group at any given time. Typically around 8 inmates. They work every day regardless of weather because the horses need to be fed and taken care of every day. Usually an inmate will have a schedule that has one day off a week.
